We created ICE (Intelligent Control of Energy) and work directly with manufacturers of power equipment to develop ICE compliant equipment used to manage power capacity in data centers. We also have designed and manufactured energy storage and power switching hardware for our applications. 

Job Description

VPS is seeking to fill an open position for a CA-licensed Professional Electrical Engineer immediately. The position requires mission critical power system design and operation experience related to data centers. Activities will include collaboration with internal VPS team members, partners, outside consultants, and equipment manufacturers. 

The position will be a part of a cohesive team which forms the Product, Engineering, and Field Service groups as well as the Sales and Marketing teams. The Mission Critical Electrical Engineer will be responsible for working with this team and

  • Providing guidance to internal teams on requirements in mission critical applications
  • Collaborating with Solutions Engineering team to create and implement viable designs in customer data centers
  • Collaborating in creation of evaluation of customer proposals
  • Creating and reviewing specifications, schematics, and drawings for product deployments
  • Working with customers’ engineers and contractors to deploy VPS products
  • Creating commissioning scripts and test plans for new and retrofitted data centers
  • Collaborating in development and review of design standards and specifications
  • Designing power systems for product development, validation testing, and demonstrations
  • Ensuring proper integration testing of units is achieved 
  • Supporting manufacturing teams to create comprehensive factory acceptance tests
  • Reviewing all technical aspects of next generation hardware solutions
  • Documenting technical power architecture at all levels of design 
  • Contributing to design and testing interfaces and firmware for embedded systems
  • Product support for customer installations
  • Participation in Root-Cause-Analysis (RCA)

Tasks may include working in manufacturing facilities during design and development phases, conducting field site surveys, proof of concept deployments in customer facilities, systems assessments, creating CAD-based plans, schematics, and coordinated construction documents, equipment selection, load calculations, control diagrams, system narratives, commissioning planning & execution, and creating specification documents. Sales support will require presentations to customers, peers, and public trade shows and similar venues.  


  • California licensed Professional Engineer in good standing
  • NCEES Records in good standing or a work in progress
  • BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering with approximately 5 years’ experience in mission critical data center/computer room environments
  • Demonstrate proficiency in
    • Electrical system design and construction requirements for electrical projects from concept through commissioning 
    • AutoCAD (version 2005 or better), office productivity software (Word, Excel, or similar), and design and calculation software
    • Reading and interpreting electrical drawings and design documents
    • Reading and writing specifications
    • Estimating cost and time
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of
    • utility systems, service entrance, distribution switchgear, emergency power systems and their related transfer systems, power distribution, and grounding 
    • Power protection and distribution configurations across all levels of standard designs using redundant operation, concurrently maintainable, and fault tolerant operation
  • Familiar with
    • Current and emerging industry standards, vendors, and technologies as they relate to the data center and electrical industries
    • Power electronics converter design and testing
    • Lighting, fire detection, and alarm systems
    • Mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, etc.) and applicable codes and standards
  • Other Abilities:
    • Works well with customers, engineers, architects, contractors, and consultants
    • Coordination and record keeping skills 
    • Strong verbal and writing skills
    • Able to work in the United States and travel to customer sites domestically and internationally 

Required experience

  • Data Center Electrical Engineering: 5 years

Required license or certification

  • Professional Engineer California Licensed (other state licenses are acceptable)
